Description

In the face of a sharp increase in financially-motivated online sextortion schemes targeting minors, our analysis of 27,000 victim posts highlights a significant rise in incidents, with cases tripling between 2021 and 2023 and a 340% surge noted last year. Our detailed review of 300 cases involving minors points to a disturbing pivot towards financial exploitation, predominantly driven by organized crime networks within Africa, notably in Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Mali, with a worrying trend towards young male targets. This escalation, evident across diverse platforms and offenses, poses a critical challenge for trust and safety teams tasked with mitigating this evolving menace. Our upcoming presentation will unveil fresh insights into the sextortion landscape, focusing on minors. Attendees will explore an innovative detection strategy that merges intelligence-led data gathering with algorithmic profiling, aiming to proactively protect potential victims and counteract this growing threat.
