In the face of a sharp increase in financially-motivated online sextortion schemes targeting minors, our analysis of 27,000 victim posts highlights a significant rise in incidents, with cases tripling between 2021 and 2023 and a 340% surge noted last year. Our detailed review of 300 cases involving minors points to a disturbing pivot towards financial exploitation, predominantly driven by organized crime networks within Africa, notably in Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Mali, with a worrying trend towards young male targets. This escalation, evident across diverse platforms and offenses, poses a critical challenge for trust and safety teams tasked with mitigating this evolving menace.
